A bizarre video from China is getting viral on the internet wherein the citizens of Liaoning witnessed a rainfall of worms. It is also being said that similar worm-like objects fell from the sky in Beijing too.
In the viral clips residents were seen covering themselves with umbrellas as they went along with their routines. So far the cause of this bizarre kind of rainfall remains mysterious, but a scientific journal Mother Nature Network suggested that the worms were dropped after being swept up by heavy winds. People said that it is rare but not impossible for earthworms to fall from the sky during rain, a phenomenon called "Earthworm rain." This usually occurs when there are strong winds, storms or whirlpools that lift the worms or insects and carry them long distances before they fall back to the ground with the rain.” Meanwhile, a Chinese journalist Shen Shiwei claimed that the video was fake and that the city of Beijing had witnessed no rainfall in recent times. “I’m in Beijing and this video is fake. Beijing hasn’t got rainfall these days,” Shen Shiwei tweeted.
However, some people suggested that the slimy-looking things were not worms but poplar flowers – a tulip tree whose blooms resemble earthworms. A user said on Twitter, “These are not worms or animals, but flower stalks dropped from trees. When poplar flower spikes start to fall, it means that they are about to bloom”
