1.34 minutes long CCTV footage video, purportedly of a man in a black hat grabbing and stabbing a woman, has gone viral among residents in. It was claimed that the incident took place in the city. The video shows a woman getting down from a car near a residential complex and a man in a black dress with a hat grabbing her from behind and stabbing her to death. It further shows the killer pulling the woman's body and putting it in a car before fleeing from the spot. The video was widely shared with the hashtag #HatmanKillerInMumbai. The video created panic among the residents. A Twitter handle that shared the video wrote,"A very Serious and Dangerous incident took place in Mumbai. A young girl lost her life #HatmanKillerInMumbai ruthlessly killed her, watch out," Several other responses were also on the same lines advising the public against going alone to deserted areas at night. Several Mumbaikars contacted the police online and offline to enquire about the footage. The police have completely dismissed the incident. Now, the Mumbai police have clarified that the visual is fake and no such incident has happened in the city.
The Mumbai police said, "A widely circulated video given the title 'Hatman Killer in Mumbai' shows CCTV footage of the stabbing of a woman in Andheri. We have confirmed that the clip is completely fake and request all to not share it for it furthers chaos and panic.” Several independent fact-checkers found that the clip was from an upcoming movie Maarrich starring Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor. However, the makers of the movie have not commented on the viral clip. As soon as the news of the video being fake was issued, several netizens who shared the video deleted it later. Many said that #HatmanKillerInMumbai is a paid promotion for @TusshKapoor upcoming movie called MAARRICH . The makers should be held accountable for this absolute disgrace to spread chaos and fear among the city. IT'S FAKE. Don't share it. Fake journalists have shared it for promotion. #SHAME
