Japan to Gift 2 Bullet Trains for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Line

Japan has gifted two Shinkansen bullet trains to India to support the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project and strengthen India–Japan ties.

India is working on its first-ever bullet train line between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, covering 508 km. These superfast trains will run at speeds of up to 320 km/h. In a kind and friendly gesture, Japan has gifted two bullet trains to India—for free!

What are these trains?
The gifted trains are from Japan’s famous Shinkansen series, known all over the world for their amazing speed, top safety, and comfortable rides. The two trains—E5 and E3 series—will arrive in India by early 2026.

Why did Japan gift the trains?
Japan and India share a strong friendship. To support India’s bullet train dream, Japan is helping by sharing its best train technology. This also strengthens future partnerships between both countries in rail development.

This gift is part of a long-term agreement made in 2016 between PM Narendra Modi and Japan’s former PM Shinzo Abe. The goal was to support the "Make in India" mission and bring world-class train tech to India.

What will India do with the trains?
These gifted trains will not carry passengers right away. They will be used for testing in India’s climate—like high heat, dust, and humidity. This testing will help Indian engineers learn how to run high-speed trains smoothly in our conditions.

The results will also guide Indian companies in building future trains—maybe even a brand-new E10 model made right here in India!

How does India benefit?
- Free access to high-speed train technology
- Training and knowledge for Indian engineers
- Future chances to build such trains in India
- Stronger India–Japan friendship
- Big support for the Make in India dream

Also, Japan is funding 80% of the total project cost with a low-interest loan, showing its strong support for India’s growth.

This is a major step towards modern rail travel and a bright future for Indian railways.
