Karnataka: Rs.4 Lakh Insurance For Swiggy Zomato Delivery Workers
Karnataka's budget for 2023-24: Free insurance for delivery personnel and financial aid to households through five poll guarantees.
Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, presented his 14th budget in the state Vidhana Soudha on Friday. The budget was for the year 2023-24. In the budget, he announced something very surprising.
In the budget, he said that the government will give life insurance of Rs 2 lakh and accidental insurance of Rs 2 lakh to the delivery personnel of Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, etc. The insurance premium of this insurance will be borne by the Karnataka government. Understanding the unique challenges faced by this workforce, the government has taken this significant step to provide them with the necessary support and protection. The decision was welcomed by the United Food Delivery Partners’ Union (UFDPU), a union working for the rights of delivery workers in the state. "The rights of gig workers were not recognized in the state despite repeated appeals sent to the government. We welcome the government's decision.” The union further asked the state government to formally recognise gig economy workers and provide them with the government benefits given to workers in other sectors. The union also appealed that a law should be introduced to stop the exploitation of gig workers. Siddaramaiah while presenting the budget in the state assembly informed that government will provide an additional financial aid of ?4,000 to ?5,000 a month to each household through the five poll guarantees promised in the Congress party's manifesto. The five guarantees will cost the exchequer approximately ?52,000 crore annually and are expected to benefit around 1.3 crore families.
