Hijab controversy in India gained light in December when a few Muslim girls outside their college campus in Karnataka were not allowed to enter the campus with their Hijabs. BJP which is the ruling party in Karnataka as well as in the centre has always backed the concept of the same law for every citizen across the whole country irrespective of their religious beliefs. Karnataka State government further supported this ban on hijabs, saffron scarfs or any such accessories related to religious beliefs inside any educational institute like school and colleges which has a uniform. However, this decision made by the government of Karnataka was further challenged in the high court when some Muslim girls filed a petition against this.
The Karnataka High Court earlier ordered that students should not wear hijab, saffron shawls or use any religious flags while attending classes in Karnataka colleges that have a uniform, till the Court decides the case relating to the ban on hijab in certain government colleges. A bench of three judges of the Karnataka Highcourt has declared their final decision. The judges said that they supported the Karnataka government's order of banning hijab, bhagwa or any such accessory related to religious beliefs. The court dismissed various petitions which were filed against the ban on Hijab, bhagwa etc. The high court further said that wearing Hijab is not an essential religious practice of Islam. This is why it should not be worn in schools and colleges where there is a uniform.
Following the High court's order, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai appealed for peace and harmony in the state. He said, “All students should follow the high court order and should not boycott classes or examinations. We will have to abide by the court orders and will take strict action against those who would take law and order in hand.”
When Anas Tanvir- A Supreme court lawyer tweeted, that the decision in the high court is not right and we’ll further be moving to the supreme court. Challenging this decision as this is the only option left.
