Targeted attacks on Kashmiri hindu’s in the Kashmir Valley has again become an everyday story. On the morning of 31st May 2022 a 36 year old teacher named Rajani Bala went to teach in a school in J&K's Kulgam district. She was a Kashmiri Pandit. As she was about to enter the school, she was shot dead by terrorists. Students who had assembled outside their classroom for their morning prayers saw the entire incident. Earlier in May a government employee, a TV artist, and a wine-shop staffer all of whom were Kashmiri Pandits were killed by militants in separate incidents. Now Rajani becomes the 4th Kashmiri Pandit to be killed. The recent killing reignited protests by the Kashmiri Hindu community in Kashmir, demanding protection and relocation, with roadblocks in several parts of the Kashmir valley.
36 Year old Bala lived with her husband Raj Kumar, who is also a school teacher in Kulgam, and their 13-year-old daughter Sana. Families said that many told the couple to leave Kashmir as it was not safe for Kashmiri Pandits but they said they can not afford to leave a government job. Police said they will soon identify and arrest the militants behind the attack. This continuous targetted killing of Hindu’s in the Kashmir Valley has yet again caused fear in the Kashmir valley refreshing the scary memories of the 90’s when lakhs of Kashmiri Hindus were murdered, raped and forced to leave their homes in Kashmir. Mainstream political parties in the Kashmir valley, Jammu & Kashmir National Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party, condemned the killing and blamed the administration for failing to safeguard people.
