Kerala: Mom and Live-in Partner Caught For Brutal Death of 1-yr-old Baby

An 18-month-old boy's death, initially reported as choking, allegedly exposed months of severe abuse, leading to the arrest of his mother's partner and mother in Kerala.

What was initially reported as a tragic choking incident in Kerala has now emerged as a horrifying case of prolonged child abuse and murder.

On May 29, 18-month-old Arshid was brought to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram by his mother's live-in partner, Ashkar, who claimed the child had choked on food. Doctors declared the toddler dead.

However, the postmortem uncovered a disturbing reality. Investigators found dozens of injuries across the child's body, including broken ribs, fractured arms, burn marks, old scars, and evidence of severe physical abuse.

During questioning, Ashkar allegedly confessed that he had been abusing Arshid for months and viewed the child as an obstacle in his relationship with the boy's mother, Akhila. He admitted to fatally assaulting the toddler before attempting to cover up the crime and staging it as an accident.

Police also arrested Akhila after she allegedly admitted that she had witnessed the abuse on multiple occasions but failed to intervene. Family members claim they had earlier raised concerns after noticing injuries on the child.

As the investigation continues, authorities are examining additional allegations against Ashkar, while further charges may be added against Akhila. The case has sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns about child protection and abuse.
