Ladies Not Allowed to Travel in Local Trains

Millions of people in Mumbai live away from the city and depend on the railways for their daily commute. Mumbai’s local train services are the lifeline of Mumbai and were shut down on 23rd March 2020, as part of the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. Till now only employees of the state and central governments and those working in the essential sector such as nationalized and private banks were allowed to travel in local trains. The delay in restarting local trains for all, is increasing the troubles and inconvenience.
A letter was sent by the State Government recently which stated that the services can resume for women. On 16th October the Maharashtra government announced that ladies would be allowed to travel in local trains from 17th October. Local train services may be made available to all ladies from 11 AM to 3 PM and again from 7 PM onwards till end of local services for the day, with effect from 17th October 2020 in Mumbai. Hours after the letter from Maharashtra government, officials from the Western Railway (WR), said that the services cannot resume for the women and has declined the permission.
As per reports, officials have decided that the services can resume only after discussions are held in a meeting between the State and Railway Authorities. After that the team will make guidelines and then after that the permission would be given. On Wednesday 14th Oct, the Maharashtra government allowed metro and monorail services to operate for general passengers. The metro administration informed that it will start its operation from Monday 19th October and the monorail was on track from 18th October.
