The Maharashtra government has finally granted 16% reservation to the Maratha community. This reservation will be applicable to jobs as well as education. Families earning more than 8 lakhs per year will not be eligible.
A survey carried out by the M.G.Gaikwad Commision found that, from the total population of maharashtra, the Marathas comprise of almost 32%. They feel their community is socially and economically backward. Most of the Maratha families are farmers who earn less than a 1 lakh per year. Majority of these families are below the poverty line.
The Marathas are now part of the Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) category. Other quotas under the OBC category won't be touched.
The total reservation quota for all the different communities in Maharashtra is now 68%. Maharashtra is second highest in India that gives such a high percentage of reservation after Tamil Nadu which has 69%.
Maharashtra Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has called this a “historic win” for the maratha community.
