Maharashtra Govt. Warns of Lockdown As COVID-19 Cases Rise

The Maharashtra government has warned of taking “strict actions” to implement coronavirus-related restrictions amid a rise in daily new cases in the last few days.

The number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra are rising. In particular, in Mumbai there are over 400 every day and Maharashtra registered 4,092 new Covid-19 cases on 14th February and 3,365 cases on 15th February. It was the sixth consecutive day when over 3,000 cases were reported in the state.  The Maharashtra government has warned of taking “strict actions” to implement coronavirus-related restrictions amid a rise in daily new cases in the last few days. 

The state officials said that factors like the resumption of local trains for the general public, increased interaction among groups and non-compliance of coronavirus-related precautionary guidelines have led to the rise in cases. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that another lockdown may be reimposed in Mumbai if people do not abide by COVID-19 norms. She added, “Most people travelling in trains don't wear masks. People must take precautions else we will have another lockdown”  BMC has started deploying mobile Covid-19 testing vans in some parts of Dharavi in Mumbai. It has also decided to keep its jumbo Covid-19 care centres open till March 31.  State’s Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that the “3T formula” of tracing, testing and treatment will have to be followed to tackle the rise in the number of cases.
