Maharashtra to Get New City Called Third Mumbai

The Maharashtra government has reportedly approved the proposal for developing a new city called ‘Third Mumbai’. Sources from the Maharashtra state government and multiple media reports have confirmed that the state government officials have given go-ahead for Third Mumbai last week. The aim behind this decision is to offer better housing, transport facilities and infrastructure for the currently soaring population of Mumbai. The ‘Third Mumbai’ will be built around the Navi Mumbai International Airport and will be connected to Mumbai by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, also known as Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) One of the Maharashtra Government officials said “We are calling it the Third Mumbai which will have all the necessary infrastructure. From residential (luxury and affordable), commercial complexes, data centers, hubs for MNCs and banks, and financial companies to large knowledge parks; it will have everything. A robust public transportation shall also be developed there.” The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is likely to get the order for modifying the boundaries of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). A separate department called the New Town Development Authority (NTDA) has also been established for the same. According to the report, some areas of Ulwe, Pen, Panvel, Uran, Karjat and surrounding regions will be part of Third Mumbai. Around 200 villages will also be a part of it. The new city has been planned to promote economic activity and contribute to the nation’s GDP. This decision has come after the collaboration of MMRDA and India’s planning agency of NITI Aayog to boost Mumbai’s GDP from the current $140 billion to $300 billion by 2030. The government official also said “There is a plan to develop a second BKC in Kharghar. Around 150 hectares of land is expected to be available for developing it into a purely commercial area that would attract both Indian companies and MNCs.”
