Many Indians Celebrate Pakistan’s Victory Against India
Many face police action for celebrating Pakistan's win against India.
Pakistan beat India by 10 wickets in a T20 match on 24 October, breaking a decades-old winning streak for India. Notably, Sunday's match had coincided with Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Jammu & Kashmir. This is the first time he is visiting the state since the removal of Article 370 in 2019. After India lost the match, pictures of Indians were very sad by India’s loss but shockingly some people in J&K celebrated Pakistan’s victory.
Students staying at the hostel of the Government Medical College (GMC) and students of the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) erupted in cheers and were joyfully celebrating Pakistan’s victory. A video of them doing all this went viral on social media. The police have arrested some of the students and filed a case against them under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which is usually used in terrorism cases. The students may be put in jail for years and they may have to pay fines as well. Many students were called for questioning as well.
Meanwhile, in Samba area of J&K, police were arrested raising pro-Pakistan slogans. People were celebrating Pakistan’s victory in other states of India as well. In Agra, three students studying at an Engineering College shared WhatsApp messages in support of the Pakistan team. They were studying under the Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme.
When their messages went viral people became very angry at them. They later apologized for the messages but they have since been rusticated from the college and are facing a police case involving sections of the IPC and the IT Act. A teacher at a school in Rajasthan's Udaipur shared a photo of Pakistani players and wrote "We won" on her WhatsApp status. After the status went viral, she apologized saying she did not mean to hurt anyone's sentiments. The school has sacked her while the police have filed a case against her.
