A tragic explosion and fire tore through Waldo’s discount supermarket in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, on 1 November 2025, killing 23 people, including children, and injuring several others.
What began as a normal shopping day ended in heartbreak as toxic smoke filled the building, trapping shoppers inside. The incident took place during the Day of the Dead, a holiday when families in Mexico honour and remember their departed loved ones.
The explosion occurred in the afternoon in downtown Hermosillo, a busy commercial area. Witnesses said they heard a loud blast, followed by flames and thick smoke spreading through the store. Many were shopping for holiday supplies when the fire broke out.
Firefighters and emergency teams worked for hours to control the blaze. Most victims reportedly died from inhaling toxic gases rather than from the flames. Around 12 people were hospitalized, with several in critical condition.
Investigators believe the blast may have been caused by a faulty electrical transformer inside the store. Authorities have found no signs of foul play or terrorism. The Sonora Attorney General’s Office said the investigation is ongoing.
Governor Alfonso Durazo called the event “a deep tragedy” and promised a transparent investigation. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed sorrow and directed federal agencies to help local authorities.
Across social media, people mourned the victims using hashtags like #SonoraFire and #PrayForHermosillo, expressing grief for the lives lost on a day meant to honour the dead.
