MLAs MPs Vote to Choose India’s Next President
The elections to choose the 15th President of India was held on 18th July and the counting of votes will be held on 21st July.
In a video released earlier, we have already told you about the two strongest presidential candidates to fight the presidential election.Draupadi Murmu, the 64-year-old tribal leader and former Governor of Jharkhand, was named as the BJP-led NDA's choice for the next President of India. However, talking about the opposition, Yashwant Sinha has been named as the joint candidate of the opposition parties for the Presidential election.
Now, the elections to choose the 15th President of India were held on 18th July. The counting of votes will be held on 21st July and the new President will take oath on 25th July, as per the schedule announced by the Election Commission, in the election in which the voting was held on 18th of July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, chief ministers from across the country, and other MPs and MLAs cast their votes. Moreover, after 5 PM, MLAs and MP’s who were positive for Covid-19 were also allowed to vote following strict covid-19 protocols by wearing PPE Kit, face mask and face sheets.
In all, around 4,800 MPs and MLAs have cast their votes till 5 pm on the 18th of July, to elect the 15th President of India, Appealing to lawmakers for support on the same day, Opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha has said, “I have repeatedly said that this election is very important as it will decide the direction as to whether democracy will remain in India or will slowly end.” However, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Droupadi Murmu has a clear edge over Sinha as over 60 per cent of votes are expected to be polled in her favour. Along with the BJP, she has the support of BJD, YSRCP, BSP, AIADMK, TDP, JD(S), Shiromani Akali Dal, Shiv Sena and JMM.
If elected, she will become the first woman from the tribal community to hold the country’s top constitutional post. However, who will become India’s next president will only be announced after the results are declared on the 21st of July.
