Yesterday on 10th December 2020 Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed a ground-breaking ceremony in Delhi to mark the symbolic launch of the new parliament building. Six priests from the Sringeri Mutt in Karnataka were called for the ceremony. Around 200 dignitaries, including Union Ministers, MPs, foreign envoys, and religious leaders attended the function that was webcast live. Ratan Tata, whose Tata Projects has the contract to build the new parliament building, was also present. However, the construction cannot begin as the Supreme Court is hearing petitions challenging the project on environmental grounds.

Last week, the Supreme Court had berated the government saying, “You know that there are many cases against the new parliament project. SC has not made any decision. Still you are "pushing forward aggressively". You can lay the foundation stone, you can carry on paperwork but there will be no construction or demolition and no cutting down any trees." The new parliament building is part of the Central Vista Project. In this project, a new parliament building will be constructed and various old government buildings will be refurbished. The entire project will cost Rs 20,000 crore. The new parliament building will alone cost Rs 1,000 crore and is expected to be completed in time for the country's 75th Independence Day in August 2022.

The current parliament building, a circular monument built under British rule, will become a museum.
