Mumbai’s COVID Positivity Rate Below 5%
The Covid-19 positivity rate in Mumbai has fallen to just 5% after being at an all-time high since the start of the pandemic in March.
When the COVID pandemic started in March, 35-36% of people were testing positive. Since the percentage of the number of people getting positive results was very high. On 4th December, 16,394 people were tested for COVID-19. Out of these 825 people tested positive. This means only 5.03% of the people tested positive. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), this is a big drop in the positivity rate. The WHO has said that if a country has a positivity rate of 5%, then it is very much possible to control COVID-19.
A top BMC official said that “ In the last 10 days the number of positive cases has dropped significantly. This is a big success for Mumbai. However, we can not be complacent.” However, Mumbai still has the highest number of deaths due to COVID in India. Health experts have warned that with the fall in temperatures, the number of cases could increase. Many have praised the BMC efforts to contain the virus in Mumbai’s congested areas and the slum areas of Dharavi.
