Mumbai to Install 5,500 CCTV Cameras

Mumbai Police proposes to install 5,500 CCTV cameras to help identify criminals in the city.

In October 2016, 4,746 CCTV cameras were installed in Mumbai, which were a big help to the Mumbai Police. These cameras helped identify murder cases, street crimes, house break-in and also people who cut the traffic signal. Since 2016, the Traffic Police with the help of CCTV cameras have issued 10 lakh e-challans.

Now the Mumbai Police are going to install 5,500 more CCTV cameras worth Rs 300 crore. They are going to place their proposal in front of the Vidhan Sabha today.

These cameras will be installed at main roads and traffic junctions. The CCTV cameras will help the police to keep an eye on narrow lanes, areas around slums, and areas where several crimes against women have been reported.

Last week, the Maharashtra government installed 500 cameras just to manage crimes against women. 94 senior police inspectors took feedback from more than 500 police stations in Mumbai. From the feedback, the Mumbai Police learnt that CCTV cameras help the police catch criminals faster.
