The four men convicted of the gang rape and murder of Nirbhaya on December 16, 2012, were hanged at 5:30 am on Friday. After 7 long years, where people continuously demanded their death penalty, finally, the men were hanged. Mukesh Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) have been hanged together in Tihar Jail.
This is the first time that 4 people were hanged together. Nirbhaya was brutally raped but hanging her rapists was not easy. Nirbhaya's parents fought very hard to make sure their daughter received justice. The case went to the High Court, the Supreme Court, and the president's office. Since the men kept filing petitions in the Supreme Court their hanging kept getting postponed.
Finally, they were hanged on Friday 20th March 2020. After the four Nirbhaya convicts were hanged, the victim's mother, Asha Devi, spoke to the media and thanked the judiciary and the government for ensuring that the rapists of her daughter were executed.
