Now Aadhar Not Needed to Get Sim Cards
Following the September 26, 2018 Supreme Court’s verdict relating to Aadhaar authentication, the government has revamped the digital KYC norms.
On 26th September 2018 had declared that private companies can not use Aadhaar card for KYC authentication. KYC means “Know your customer”. This is the process of a business verifying the identity of its clients. The government has now changed the digital KYC rules. According to new rules, Aadhaar is not compulsory for getting a new SIM card connection. The government has directed telecommunication companies to implement this change and start accepting alternative documents.
As per the rules, buyers seeking new SIM connection will now have to undergo a digital verification process. All telecom companies are required to provide a licensed version of their App to the registered shops. The App will help to complete the digital verification process. On this App, the customers will have to enter their username and password. They will also have to submit a proof of their permanent address at the retail store. The retail owner will then take a picture of the customer, and other details such as location, date, day, time etc. and upload on this App.
There has been a lot of confusion regarding the services that require Aadhaar and the ones that do not. Now Aadhaar is no longer compulsory for services such as bank account, telecom services, and school admissions/entrance tests. However, it is still necessary for getting a PAN, filing I-T returns, and availing government welfare schemes.
