Phase 2 of Lok Sabha Election Polls

The second phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections voering 95 constituencies across 12 states, saw an overall turnout of 68.1%.

The second phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections was held yesterday on 18th April 2019. Elections were held across 12 states for 95 Lok Sabha Seats. According to the  Election Commission 68.1% of the population cast their vote. Compared to the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, where 69.5% of the population, turned up to cast their vote for the same number of seats.

The elections were held peacefully in all the states, except for a few incidents in West Bengal and Manipur. In West Bengal 76.4% of the people turned up to vote. A brisk voter turnout was recorded in most of the states. In Assam it was 76.4%, in Puducherry it was 78.1%, in Manipur it was 78.5%, in Tamil Nadu it was 71.2%, in Karnataka it was 68.2%, in it Odisha it was 62.4%, in Bihar it was 62.04%, in Uttar Pradesh it was 62% and in Chhattisgarh it was 73%. There were two violent incidents reported in Chhattisgarh, but casualties haven’t been reported.The only state that saw a low voter turnout was Jammu & Kashmir. Only 45.6% of the people cast their vote. In Srinagar only 14% people cast their vote. Elections were held for 10 Lok sabha seats in the Marathwada and Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. 63% of the people turned up to cast their votes.

Three villages in Solapur boycotted the elections over water crisis. One polling staff died of a heart attack in Karnataka, while another voter who was waiting in line to vote in Tamil Nadu also suffered a heart attack. Complaints of faulty voting machines came from several states, including Assam, Maharashtra and Karnataka.  In Tamil Nadu, as many as 384 faulty EVMs and 692 faulty VVPAT machines were replaced.
