Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the centenary celebration of the Aligarh Muslim University on 22nd December. The university said that PM Modi will be the Chief Guest and attend the program virtually with Union Education Minister, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. The media statement from the university added that the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor, has appealed to all concerned to keep the Centenary Programme above politics". This is Modi’s first visit to the university. Also he would be the only Prime Minister to visit AMU since 1964. Lal Bahadur Shastri was the only other sitting Prime Minister to attend an event at the AMU in 1964. Aligarh Muslim University has always had a difficult, thorny relation with the BJP. BJP leaders have repeatedly criticised the university students and even suggested that the name of the institution be changed. During the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, the students of the Aligarh Muslim University, along with Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia, have been subject to police brutality. Two years ago, a letter from the local MLA about the portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, hanging in the university's student hall, had become a huge controversy. PM Modi’s visit marks an important milestone in the rich heritage of the varsity. Commenting on the political issues due to the visit, a senior official said that many members of BJP kept attacking the university. Modi’s visit will show the members that Modi has a strong relationship with the university.
