PM Modi Announces Gaganyaan's 4 Astronauts
PM Modi announced & introduced the four astronauts selected for ISRO’s Gaganyaan Mission on 27th February 2024 at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
India is making giant leaps in space programs. After the massive success of Mangalyaan, multiple Chandranyaans & Aditya L1, India is now getting ready to launch the Gaganyaan mission. The Gaganyaan Mission is India's first human space flight program for which extensive preparations are underway at various Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) centers. According to the reports, the aim of the Gaganyaan mission is to send Indian astronauts to an orbit of 400km and bring them back safely after 3 days by landing in the Indian Ocean waters. Most of the systems that will be used In Gaganyaan are made in India. ISRO has been carrying out several tests to prepare for the flight. In October 2023, an important test successfully concluded that the crew could safely escape the rocket in case it malfunctioned. On 27th February 2024, PM Modi at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, announced the names of the four astronauts selected for the Gaganyaan mission.The four astronauts are Group Captain - Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Group Captain - Angad Pratap, Group Captain - Ajit Krishnan, and Wing Commander - Shubhanshu Shukla. All 4 astronauts are Indian Air Force (IAF) test pilots from Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), Bengaluru. They were shortlisted by ISRO & Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) after several selection rounds four years ago. The four astronauts have completed their initial training in Russia. (insert ISH News link) They are currently undergoing hard & strict training at one of the ISRO facilities to familiarize themselves with Gaganyaan’s specifics. PM Modi congratulated the selected astronauts & said that their names will be carved in the history of India. He called them the four forces that hold the aspirations (hope & ambition) of 1.4 billion Indians and marked “...An Indian is going to space, after 40 years. This time, the time is ours, the countdown is ours and the rocket is also ours”. PM Modi also requested the Indian citizens & media to respect astronauts' privacy & training and asked not to disturb them with interviews, autographs & selfies. During his speech, PM Modi also said that India will return to the Moon in the coming years to bring more samples for better understanding and will also explore Venus. He also announced that India will have its own Space Station too by 2035. ISH congratulates the 4 selected astronauts and wishes them all the best for the Gaganyaan mission.
