For weeks there have been rumours that PM Narendra Modi is going to reshuffle and some have been promoted to various cabinet ministers. Finally yesterday 7 July, PM Modi reshuffled the various ministers' posts. This is PM Modi's first major overhaul of the Union Cabinet since he took office for a second term in 2019. The cabinet Ministers have been shuffled because the Modi government has been widely criticised for not being able to manage the COVID-19 pandemic properly and the second wave of the coronavirus. The other reason is the assembly elections which will be held next year. A total of 43 political leaders have been sworn-in as union ministers. Of these, 36 ministers are new faces while 7 ministers are sitting ministers.
Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare & Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan have stepped down from their post. This is because of the high number of infections in the second wave of the coronavirus.
PM Modi will be incharge of:
Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions
Department of Atomic Energy
Department of Space
