PM Modi US Visit: Meeting with President Trump To Big F-35 Deal
PM Modi’s visit to the US strengthened ties with President Trump, focusing on defense, energy, and trade agreements.
Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the US to meet President Donald Trump and discuss important matters related to India-US relations. The visit was highly anticipated, especially after President Trump had announced the possibility of imposing "reciprocal tariffs" on countries, including India. Tariffs are taxes on goods from other countries, and Trump had warned that the US would impose similar tariffs if any country taxed US goods. This created concern before PM Modi’s visit.
However, after their meeting, President Trump did not announce any new tariffs on India, which means the visit was successful. The two leaders shared a warm moment when Trump welcomed PM Modi at the White House, though a viral video initially confused people as it showed Trump not coming out to meet Modi right away. Later, both leaders were seen hugging each other, and Trump even said, "We missed you."
The meeting had positive moments, such as Trump gifting PM Modi a book with photos from their previous events, "Howdy Modi" and "Namaste Trump." Trump also showed great respect for Modi by pulling out a chair for him during a deal-signing event.
During the press conference, Modi was asked about the Adani bribery case, but he called it a "personal matter." Trump also addressed the Bangladesh crisis, saying Modi could handle the issue without interference from the US.
A major announcement was that the US would be sending Tahawwur Hussain Rana, accused in the 26/11 attacks, back to India for trial. Another significant deal discussed was the sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to India, strengthening India’s defense. This worried Pakistan and China, as India's military power would increase.
The two countries also reached an agreement on energy, with India planning to buy oil and gas from the US. Other projects discussed included the Autonomous System Industry Alliance (ASIA), IMEC Corridor, and the QUAD summit in India.
PM Modi’s visit also included a meeting with Elon Musk, where Modi gifted Musk’s children three books by Indian authors. Musk gifted Modi a heatshield tile used on SpaceX's Starship.
