PM Modi : ISL Will Be Taught As A Language in Schools

Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced Indian Sign Language (ISL) as a subject in all schools to facilitate communication with the Deaf. Watch our latest video to learn more.

On 29 July 2020, PM Modi had launched the National Education Policy 2020. It was launched to make education affordable, accessible and give good quality education. Yesterday to mark the 1yr of NEP, Modi launched many initiatives in the education sector. PM Modi gave a speech and announced that, “Indian Sign Language will be taught as a language subject in schools. This will be done for the first time. Now ISL will be taught as any spoken language such as English, Hindi, Marathi, etc in school. The initiative will ensure inclusivity for Deaf students who use sign language to express themselves. This will give a big boost to Indian Sign Language, will help Deaf individuals a lot.” 

Also the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment informed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center (ISLRTC) and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to make educational materials accessible for Deaf children. 1200 educational video programmes (for Class 1 to 12) have been made in Indian Sign Language. This will be available on the government's website. The Deaf Community were very happy with the news and see it as a step towards quality and accessible education.
