Police Complaint Against Ranveer Singh Over Kantara Mimicry

Ranveer Singh faced criticism for mimicking a sacred Kantara scene and calling the character Chaundi a “female ghost” during IFFI 2025.

The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 took place in Goa from 20 to 28 November. During the closing ceremony, actor Ranveer Singh stepped off the stage to greet celebrities seated in the front row. Among them were South film stars Rajinikanth and Rishab Shetty. Ranveer warmly hugged Rishab, but moments later, he stuck his tongue out and began mimicking Rishab Shetty’s intense expressions from the film Kantara.

Kantara was released in 2022, and its prequel Kantara: Chapter 1 released worldwide in October 2025. The story is based on Bhuta Kola, a sacred form of worship in Karnataka. One of the most powerful scenes shows the character Chaundi, the fierce sister of Guliga Daiva. This portrayal is deeply spiritual and important to Tulu and Bhoota Kola traditions.

Many viewers felt Ranveer’s reaction at the event was unnecessary and disrespectful. Rishab Shetty handled the situation calmly. He raised one finger, signalling Ranveer to stop, reminding him that Daiva portrayals are sacred. Another video later showed Rishab shaking his head and repeating the “no” gesture.

The controversy increased when Ranveer, while praising Rishab’s performance on stage, referred to Chaundi as a “female ghost.” He recreated expressions from the film and joked about acting in Kantara 3. This led to strong online criticism, with many accusing him of hurting religious and cultural sentiments. A formal complaint was also filed.

On 2 December 2025, Ranveer issued a public apology on Instagram, saying he only meant to appreciate Rishab’s performance and respected all cultures. Rishab Shetty has not made any public statement yet.
