President’s Rule in Maharashtra

Since none of the political parties in Maharashtra are able to come to an agreement, the Governor has decided to impose President’s rule in Maharashtra. Watch the video to learn more.

On Monday night the Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari had asked the NCP if they could get 91 more seats to meet majority seats of 145. NCP was given time till Tuesday 8:30 pm. However the NCP failed to get enough seats and requested the governor to give them two more days to try and get more seats. 

The Governor refused to give them  time. The Governor then wrote a report to PM Modi and said that political parties are fighting among each other and no party can agree to form a government in Maharashtra. 

Koshyari said that since the situation is very serious in Maharashtra the Central Government must take over and the President’s rule must be applied. PM Modi held a Cabinet meeting before he left for the Brics Summit in Brazil. Modi read the Governor’s report and agreed to impose President’s rule in Maharashtra for the next 6 months. This is the third time President’s rule has been imposed in Maharashtra. But this is the first time it has been imposed due to political problems. 


On the proceedings in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will start from 18th November. The decision for President’s Rule in Maharashtra will be presented.. After a vote if both houses agree President’s rule will be imposed in Maharashtra. After the President’s rule if political parties come to an agreement the President’s rule will be lifted and the state government will be formed
