The Indian Railways have now converted a train coach into a prototype isolation ward in New Delhi for patients of COVID-19. Watch our video for all the details.

The Indian Railways has cancelled all passenger trains due to the 21-day nationwide lockdown. They have now converted a train coach into a prototype isolation ward in New Delhi for patients of COVID-19.

If the prototype gets approved, the plan will be scaled up to accommodate the increasing number of COVID-19 patients.

Once the plan gets approved, every railways zone in Delhi will convert 10 coaches into isolation wards weekly. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates, India only has 0.7 beds per 1,000 people.

To make the patient cabin, the middle berth has been removed from 1 side, all 3 berths removed in front of the patient berth, all ladders for climbing up the berths have been removed.

The bathrooms, aisle areas and other areas have also been modified to prepare an Isolation Coach. For medical equipment, electrical points have been supplied in each compartment, segregated with air curtains. Each coach would have 10 isolation wards. However there are many issues that have to be dealt with. Such as sanitation. Once these problems are fixed and the problems are fixed the rail coaches can be used as isolation wards.
