Ratan Tata, National Icon, Passes Away At 86 in Mumbai
Ratan Tata, former Tata Group chairman, passed away at 86, leaving a lasting impact on India and the world.
Renowned industrialist and former Chairman of Tata Group, Padma Vibhushan Shri Ratan Naval Tata, passed away on the night of 9th October 2024 at the age of 86.
On 7th October 2024, Tata was rushed to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital after his blood pressure drastically dropped, which was attributed to age-related health issues. Despite issuing a statement later that day assuring the public that there was no cause for concern, Tata's condition worsened, and he passed away around 11:30 pm on 9th October.
The Chairman of Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran, confirmed Tata’s death through an official statement, describing him as a mentor and a friend whose legacy would benefit generations to come. Ratan Tata retired in 2013 at the age of 75, passing the leadership to Chandrasekaran.
The news of Tata’s passing has deeply saddened India and the world, with countless tributes pouring in. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his pain on social media, calling Tata a visionary leader and compassionate soul. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, and Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, also conveyed their heartfelt condolences, with Mahindra reflecting on Tata’s impact on India’s economy.
In honour of Tata, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a state funeral and declared 10th October 2024 as a day of mourning. The national flag will be flown at half-mast across all government offices, and all official entertainment events have been cancelled.
Tata’s mortal remains will be kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai for the public to pay their respects from 10 am to 4 pm today, followed by final rites at Worli. Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the funeral.
