Ritika Phogat Commits Suicide After Losing Wrestling Final

Today 18th March morning Indian wrestling fans got a huge shock. There were news of 17-year-old Ritika Phogat's suicide. Ritika is the cousin sister of Geeta and Babita Phogat. Phogat sisters are daughters of Mahavir Phogat on who’s life the movie Dangal starring Aamir Khan was made. Ritika was a resident of Jaitpur village in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu. She had trained under Mahavir Singh Phogat for over 5 years at his own Mahavir Phogat Sports Academy in Haryana. Ritikia had participated in the state-level wrestling tournament. The final was played on 14th March Bharatpur, Rajasthan in which Ritika lost by 1 point.She hung herself to death on 17th March and the news spread on 18th March. She was found dead at the home of her uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat in Haryana.
Haryana's Charkhi Dadri District Superintendent of Police Ram Singh Bishnoi said, “ Ritika died allegedly by suicide on 17th March. The reason behind it might have been her defeat at a recent wrestling tournament in Rajasthan. Investigation underway," Vijay Kumar Singh, Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways, was one of the first to confirm the news of Ritika's suicide on social media.He tweeted that "Terrible news that we lost #RitikaPhogat who had a brilliant career ahead. The world has changed from where it was some decades ago. Athletes are facing pressures which were not there earlier. An essential part of their training should be to deal with these pressures."
