Rs 1 Lakh for Parents with Highest Number of Children
A Mizoram minister announced a cash incentive of ? 1 lakh to a parent with the highest number of children to encourage population growth among the small Mizo communities.
Currently many states in India are encouraging population control and asking people to not have many children. However, the opposite is happening in Mizoram. A minister in Mizoram named Robert Romawia Royte said, any man or woman with the largest number of children will be given a certificate, trophy and a Rs 1 lakh cash prize. He does not mention how many children. However, was applicable only within his constituency which is Aizawl East-2. The cost of the award will be borne by a construction company owned by Mr Royte's son.
He said that, “Mizoram is home to various Mizo tribes and the population of these tribes have reduced a lot. Because of the low population the community will not be able to survive or develop. The award was announced with the aim of increasing the population.” Mizoram's neighbour Assam, however, is treading a different path. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced that his government will gradually implement a two-child policy. Under this policy, anyone with more than 2 children will not be able to avail government schemes. This policy will slowly be implemented in Assam.
