Vladimir Putin won the 2024 presidential elections of Russia by a landslide on 17th March 2024. Putin received 87.8% of the total votes and this marks the beginning of his 5th term as the president of Russia. The voting took place over a span of 3 days at polling stations across Russia, in Russian embassies around the world, in illegally captured territories of Ukraine and online. Considering his dominance in Russia and the lack of serious opponents Putin’s victory in the elections was inevitable. When Putin appeared on stage after the results announcement, his supporters chanted “Putin, Putin, Putin" and “Russia, Russia, Russia". In his victory speech, Putin thanked his supporters & the voters and announced that he & his cabinet has a lot of work to do ahead. He claimed that no one ever has nor ever will be able to intimidate or suppress Russia’s will and consciousness. He also said that the result of the elections is a message to the West that its leaders will have to deal & cope up with the confident & courageous Russia, whether in war or peace, for many more years to come. Putin also announced that he will prioritize resolving tasks related to “Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine” and would strengthen the Russian military. After the results were declared, thousands of his opponents demonstrated against Putin at polling places in Russian & abroad too. The United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and other nations claimed that the voting was unfair & unfree because of imprisonment of political opponents and information censorship. Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the elections fraudulent and illegitimate. Russia’s Presidential term is now of 6 years & if Putin successfully completes it then he will become Russia’s longest-serving leader in the last 200 years.
