Born in April 1990, Prince Al-Waleed was the eldest son of Prince Khalid bin Talal. He was also a great-grandson of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. As a young boy, he studied at a military academy in London.
In 2005, when he was only 15 years old, Prince Al-Waleed met with a bad car accident in London. He suffered severe brain injuries and internal bleeding, which caused him to fall into a coma. He was taken back to Riyadh and kept on life support at King Abdulaziz Medical City.
For many years, his family, especially his father, took great care of him. They asked for help from doctors around the world and prayed for his recovery. Although he was mostly unconscious, sometimes he showed small movements like finger twitches. These small signs gave hope to many people in Saudi Arabia and beyond.
