Serum Institute To File 100-Crore Defamation Case

A man has claimed Rs. 5 crores as compensation from Serum Institute of India after being administered the vaccine and suffering serious side effects.

A 40-year-old Chennai man who volunteered for the third phase of the Covid vaccine called Covishield trial conducted by the Serum Institute was administered the dose at Chennai's Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) on 1st October.

He filed the legal notice on 21st November against Serum Institute which stated that  ten days after the dose, he began experiencing severe headaches, total behavioural change and irritation towards light and sound and later he could not recognise or speak to anyone and he demanded Rs 5 crore as compensation.

The notice added that on 26th October he was discharged from hospital after suffering from Acute Encephalopathy as an extreme side effect of the test vaccine.

The Serum Institute of India, responding to the notice called the allegations as malicious and misconceived and have said that they will file a Rs.100 crore defamation suit against the man. They said that it sympathised with the volunteer's medical condition but there was absolutely no correlation with the vaccine trial and the medical condition of the volunteer. SII statement added that the volunteer is falsely laying the blame for his medical problems on the COVID vaccine trial

They added, “The volunteer was specifically informed by the medical team that the complications he suffered were independent of the vaccine trial he underwent. He still chose to go public and malign the reputation of the company.
