The department which studies and researches weather conditions and predicts the weather change in India is called “The Indian Meteorological Department '' or IMD. Earlier the IMD issued a warning that a cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal which is named as the “Asani '' is moving towards the north-west parts of India with the speed of 14Kmph. When the IMD issued this warning, The cyclone “Asani” was about 810 km away from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and 880 km away from Puri, Odisha.
Moreover, in the latest alert issued by the IMD, It has been mentioned that “Asani '' has now surfed into a severe Cyclone and will affect parts of Odisha, West Bengal & Andhra Pradesh. The Cyclone is expected to come around the coast of India approximately by Tuesday evening 10th of May. However, to a relief, IMD Director-General Mrutunjay Mohapatra said that the cyclone will not make direct landfall either in Odisha or Andhra Pradesh. The cyclone will move parallel to the coast and will cause moderate to heavy rainfall. No such information is given for the state of West Bengal, but according to earlier warnings, West Bengal is among the three states along with Odisha & Andhra Pradesh which will experience the effects of Asani.
Although Odisha's Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena said that they don’t see any big threats from the cyclone as it is expected to pass from around 100 Kms away from the coast, the state government is still prepared for rescue operations. Also, with the warning of heavy rainfall in several parts of the state has been issued, all the districts have been put on high alert and collectors have been given the power to perform rescue operations. Moreover, the cyclone is likely to bring moderate rainfall over West Bengal & Andhra Pradesh between Tuesday to Friday, the weather office has said. The Municipal Corporation is taking all measures on standby to clear blocks and other issues caused by fallen trees and other factors. Similar steps have been taken in the state of Andhra Pradesh, and fishermen from all three states have been advised to not sail off the sea from Tuesday until further orders are given.
