State Elections: BJP Win Haryana, NC-Cong Bags J and K
BJP won Haryana elections, while Congress-National Conference triumphed in Jammu & Kashmir.
The recent assembly elections in Haryana were held on October 5, 2024, and the results came out on October 8, 2024. Many people were shocked by the outcome, as exit polls had predicted a big win for the Congress party. Instead, the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) won for the third time in a row, taking 48 seats out of 90. Congress secured 37 seats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the BJP's campaign, which focused on winning support from non-Jaats, non-Muslims, and Other Backward Classes. One notable victory was by Savitri Jindal, India's richest woman, who won the Hisar constituency. Another surprise was Vinesh Phogat, a wrestler turned politician, who won the seat from the Julana constituency in her first election attempt after joining Congress in September 2024.
Interestingly, the BJP also won both seats in the Charkhi Dadri constituency, where residents challenged candidates to drink the foul-smelling water supplied to their village. The water is polluted and unfit for humans and animals, forcing villagers to buy clean water.
Jammu & Kashmir Elections: Congress-NC Alliance Triumphs
In Jammu & Kashmir, assembly elections took place in three phases from September 18 to October 1, 2024. This was the first assembly election in 10 years, making it a significant event for the region. The results were announced on October 8, 2024.
Despite Prime Minister Modi’s decision to remove Article 370, which granted special status to Kashmir, the Congress-National Conference alliance won 49 seats. The National Conference secured 42 seats, while Congress won 6, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 1 seat. The BJP managed to win 29 seats.
Omar Abdullah, the National Conference leader, will become the next Chief Minister. He stated that there is no chance of bringing back Article 370 and emphasized that his focus will be on working with the central government to fulfill promises made to the people.
A notable win in this election was that of Mehraj Malik, an AAP candidate from the Doda constituency. He shared that it took him 15 years to win, and he aims to address people’s issues and fight against corruption.
These surprising election results reflect changing political dynamics in both Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, showing that the political landscape in India continues to evolve.
