India’s neighboring country Nepal was struck by an earthquake on the 3rd of November 2023. The earthquake occurred at 11:47 p.m. when most of the people were fast asleep. The earthquake was recorded at 6.4 magnitude level categorizing it as ‘strong’ on the Richter scale. The Earthquake occurred at a depth of about 15 km below the district of Jajarkot, Nepal. According to local reports, eyewitnesses saw the collapse of houses in affected Nepal districts. Strong tremors were felt not only throughout Nepal but also in UP, Bihar & Delhi India. While in India, the citizens of Delhi, UP & Bihar quickly evacuated their homes after feeling the tremors for more than 15 seconds. The earthquake has caused severe property damage, and injuries to over 200 people & claimed 157 lives in Nepal. The rescue process was carried out by the Nepal police & Nepal army. Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda headed to the incident site with a medical team to provide medical assistance to the injured. Around 159 aftershocks have been recorded after the massive earthquake. However, there are no reports of any loss of life or damage to property in India. Indian PM Modi has also expressed his grief over the tragedy & offered all possible assistance to Nepal. PM Modi has also released a helpline number for Indians in Nepal seeking any kind of urgent assistance. India's first consignment of emergency relief material (medicine/food) worth ?10 cr, reached Nepal on 5th Nov 2023. This is the third occurrence of a strong earthquake in Nepal within a month. Before this, Nepal also suffered from strong earthquakes on 3rd October 2023 & 22nd October 2023. This is the worst earthquake to hit Nepal since 2015. In 2015 an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude killed some 9000 people & caused damage to 10 lakh structures in Nepal 2015.
