Supreme Court of India Gets 9 New Judges
On 31st August, CJI Ramana administered the oath of office to 9 new judges in India. This has brought the current strength of the supreme court to 33 judges.
On 31st August, NV Ramana, the Chief Justice of India administered the oath of office to nine new judges, including three women, to the Supreme Court of India. Currently, the Supreme Court has 33 judges, including the Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana.
As per tradition, new judges take the oath of office in the CJI's courtroom. However, due to the pandemic, the swearing-in ceremony was held in the auditorium of the Supreme Court's additional building complex. This is also the first time that nine judges have taken the oath in one go.
The Supreme court has had only a few female judges since its establishment.
Justice M Fathima Beevi was the first woman who became a Supreme Court Judge in 1989. Justice Indira Banerjee was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court in 2018. Justice Indu Malhotra was appointed in April 2018. Once Justice Malhotra retired in March 2021, Justice Indira Banerjee was the only woman judge in the Supreme Court.
Now, there are three more women who have been appointed as Supreme Court Judges. They are Justice Hima Kohli, Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Bela M Trivedi.
