The Supreme Court has refused to stay the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) even after reviewing 144 petitions against it.

144 petitions were filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Yesterday 22nd January 2020, A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of India  SA Bobde, heard all the petitions. The petitioners include politicians, activists, and civilians who said that the new CAA is against the Indian constitution. After reviewing the petitions, now the Supreme Court has refused to stay the law. The SC has forbidden the High Court to pass a decision regarding the CAA.

The SC said it wants to hear the Central Government’s response to the petitions and then it will decide.

Regarding petitions about Assam and Tripura, the SC said they will hear the case separately.

States such as Kerala, West Bengal, and Punjab, have asserted they won't implement the law.But the Centre Government  told them skipping the implementation is not an option as matters of citizenship are solely decided by the Centre.Protests against the CAA and NRC have been going on all over the country. Now lets see what happens.
