Now two other countries have decided to join NATO. The decision was made by their PM. Both of whom are women! Finland - Sanna Marin, Sweden - Magdalena Andersson. Their membership has now been finalised. These countries are Finland and Sweden. This has come as a huge shock. Earlier both the countries were very neutral. Whenever there was a war Sweden and Finland were always neutral and never supported any country. This is why they were never members of NATO. However after Russia invade Ukraine, Sweden & Finland were very scared. That’s when they decided that it was huigh time, they joined NATO. The USSR invaded Finland in late 1939. For more than three months the Finnish army put up fierce resistance, despite being heavily outnumbered. They avoided occupation, but ended up losing 10% of their territory. Now in 2022 when Finland saw Ukraine being invaded by Russia, they felt history maybe repeated again. Finland shared a 1,340km border with Russia and they were very scared that Russia might wage war on them as well. Sweden has also felt endangered in recent years, with several reported airspace violations by Russian military aircraft. In 2014, Swedes were shocked that a Russian submarine was lurking in the waters of Stockholm.
Both countries have been facing threats by Russia. This is why both the countries have made the formal decision to be part of NATO and their paperwork has been processed. Russia felt very threatened by Ukraine wanting to be a part of NATO as they felt NATO is inching closer and closer to Russia and becoming powerful. So Russia quickly attacked Ukraine. So now that they have joined NATO, if Russia attacks Sweden or Finland, will NATO countries attack Russia? Is Russia willing to take that risk? We will have to wait and watch.
