Tata Wins Bid to Build New Parliament Building
The new parliament building will be constructed by Tata Projects Limited at a cost of ? 861.90 crore.
The current Parliament building, built during the British era, is circular and is one of India's most acclaimed monuments. Its construction began in 1921 and was completed six years later. Earlier this year, the government had justified its decision to build a new parliament building saying the current structure was "showing signs of distress and over-use". The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is responsible for the creation & maintenance of all government buildings and projects. The CPWD opened the financial bids for the construction of a new parliament building on 16th September 2020.
Many companies submitted bids for the construction.The new parliament building will be constructed by Tata Projects Limited at a cost of ? 861.90 crore. Larsen & Toubro had submitted a higher bid of Rs 865 crore. But Tata being the lower bidder won the bid. The project is likely to be completed in 21 months from the start of the construction. But no decision has been taken about the start of the construction. According to reports, the new parliament building will be designed as a triangle. It will be built close to the existing parliament building. Officials say that the current parliament building would be used for other purposes after it is repaired and renovated.
