Thief Falls Asleep in AC Room during Robbery, Cops Wake Him Up
A thief went for a power nap in the comfort of an AC, and ended up in the police lockup.
The ongoing heatwave in India has not only been impacting people's health and businesses but also creating bizarre situations. In one such incident on the early morning of June 2, 2024, a thief named Kapil broke into the house of Dr. Sunil Pandey in the Indiranagar area of Lucknow. Dr. Pandey, who works in Varanasi, was not at home at the time of the incident.
The thief found the house empty and easily entered by opening the front gate. Once inside the living room, Kapil noticed an air conditioner and decided to turn it on. Overcome by the cool air and the heat outside, he lay on the floor, used a cushion as a pillow, and quickly fell asleep.
Dr. Pandey's neighbors, noticing the front gate was open, contacted him to inform him that he had left it open by mistake. Dr. Pandey, knowing he was out of town, immediately suspected a break-in and called the police.
When the Lucknow Police arrived at the house, they found Kapil sleeping comfortably on the floor, with the air conditioner running. The police woke him up and arrested him for theft under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 379 A. A picture of Kapil sleeping peacefully on the floor, with a mobile phone in his right hand, has gone viral on social media. The image has elicited a mix of laughter and sympathy from netizens. Many people blamed the intense heatwave for driving the thief to opt for a cool nap instead of completing his crime.
Lucknow’s North Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), R Vijay Shankar, stated that Kapil was heavily drunk at the time of the incident. He had entered the house with the intention of stealing and had ransacked the place, attempting to take various items including a washbasin, a gas cylinder, a water pump, and cash from the cupboard.
