Tiger Population Increases By 33% in India
On World Tiger Day, Prime Minister Modi announces that India has successfully managed to double its Tiger Population.
2010, at the St.Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia, world leaders had promised to double tiger population by 2022. Out of the total Tiger population in the world, 75% of the tigers live in India. In the last 4 years the tiger population has increased by 33 percent. This shows that efforts taken to save tigers is showing excellent results. The numbers for tigers has increased from 2,226 in 2014 to 2,967 in 2018. On Monday 29th July which was the World Tiger Day, PM Modi announced the increase in the number of tigers.
The positive increase indicates that India has succeeded in doubling the tiger population before this forecasted population, which would be reached in the coming four years. In 1973, when Project Tiger was initiated in India, there were only 9 Tiger Reserves in India. Currently, there are 50 Tiger Reserves with a total area of 72,749sqm. The tiger population has been rising at a regular rate of 6 % per year. Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh were the best states who worked hard to increase the population of tigers. However the number of tigers on Odisha and Chhattisgarh is reducing and is a matter of concern.
Now Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working with British TV adventurer Bear Grylls- the anchor of survival show Man Vs Wild on Discovery Channel- to take a look into India’s wildlife to raise awareness about protecting nature.
