Two Killed as Speeding Minor in Car Hits Bike at Chowpatty

In Mumbai, 2 people were killed after a minor rammed his speeding car into their bike.

On 14th June 2023, Akbar Dawood Khan (47), and Kiran Anwar Khan (36) (woman), were on a bike at 5:20 am in the morning. The two were out since Tuesday night to celebrate Akbar’s birthday. They went for dinner at Shri Krishna Hotel on Grant Road. After dinner, they went to Marine Drive Promenade. Akbar was a resident of Nagpada while Kiran lived in Grant Road. At 5:00 am they left marine drive. Akbar then headed towards Grant Road to drop Kiran home. Khan’s niece, Tasreen Begum when Khan did not return home till Wednesday morning, his wife Shagufta called him and was assured that he would reach home within five minutes. This was around 5.15am. Both were going from Marine Drive to Grant Road.

Akbar, riding the bike, took a right turn at Cafe Ideal restaurant’s junction near Girgaon Chowpatty. An oncoming Honda Accord hit Khan. The speed of the Honda was around 120kmph. The car was at a speed of 120km/hr and it rammed into the bike. Akbar died on the spot while Kiran was rushed to JJ Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Shockingly it was found that the car's driver was a 17-year-old boy. The boy and his friend did not sustain any injury as the airbag had opened when the car hit the bike. He was arrested on the spot. The boy is a student of Class 11, stays in central Mumbai, and is the son of a senior bank executive.
The police said that, ‘It is a blind spot for people taking a right at the junction as there is a slight turn before the signal for motorists heading towards Nariman Point from Malabar Hill. Since the car was in such a high speed the boy lost control. After the minors and their parents were questioned, we came to know that the boys had told their parents they were going out to cycle. However, one of them took the car keys, called his friend and both went for a joy ride. They told us that as the car had not been driven for long, its brakes got locked and they could not reduce the speed. The teenage driver’s father had bought the second-hand car in May for ?1.65 lakh and it is still in the name of the first owner.” The police said that the juvenile has been booked under relevant sections of rash and negligent driving while his father has also been booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. A notice under Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 41 has been issued to his father, who had recently undergone surgery. A report of the incident has been sent to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Khan worked as a watchman in a building named Dudhwala Complex, and he lived on Shuklaji Street. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Adil, 14, and Hasan, 18.
