Uttar Pradesh Police's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) - is a special police force in several states of India.
They have arrested two men - Mufti Qazi Jahangir Qasmi and Mohammad Umar Gautam. Both are residents of Jamia Nagar in South Delhi. The UP Police said the two men ran an organisation named Islamic Dawah Centre (IDC), along with their other associates. They were involved in a racket of converting deaf children and women to Islam. They have converted more than 1,000 people so far. During interrogation, the duo informed the police that they converted around 250-300 people every year.
According to UP ATS, the work of conversion is being done in Noida, Kanpur and Mathura in UP and also in some other States. Uttar Pradesh (ADG) (Law and order) Prashant Kumar said, “The matter came to light when parents of a student of Noida Deaf Society reported that their son is missing and was later forcefully converted to Islam. 1,500 Deaf children in Noida were also converted. The Deaf son of a couple living in Kalyanpur, Kanpur, was converted and sent to South India. Thousands of such cases have come to light. These men used to target people with weak financial backgrounds, elderly people, women, the Deaf and lured them into converting their religion and adopt Islam in exchange of money, job, marriage or other facilities. Both of them used to convert people with fear and temptation. Not only this but many women were also married after being forcefully converted.” Police officials suspect that the two men were receiving orders and funds from Pakistan’s ISI (intelligence organisation) or some other international organisation. Officials have found importing evidence stating that the two men received funds from abroad. An FIR has been lodged with Gomtinagar police station in Lucknow under Uttar Pradesh’s new anti-conversion law.
