Uma Chetry: Assam’s Trailblazer in Indian Women’s Cricket

Uma Chetry’s journey from a small village in Assam to representing India shows how hard work can make impossible dreams come true.

Uma Chetry was born on 27 July 2002 in Kandulimari village, Golaghat district, Assam. She is a right-hand batter and wicketkeeper who represents Assam in domestic cricket.

Growing up in a small Assamese village where cricket was often seen as a “boys’ game,” Uma practised with bamboo sticks and plastic balls alongside her brothers. Her father, a farmer, and her mother, a homemaker, supported her dreams quietly despite limited resources.

At 12, Uma began formal training under coach Dipen Chandra Roy at the Golaghat Stadium. Her hard work soon earned her a spot in Assam’s Under-19 team and later in the India A setup, where her fearless batting and sharp wicketkeeping caught attention.

Uma made her T20I debut for India on 7 July 2024, becoming the first woman cricketer from Assam and the entire Northeast to represent India at the senior level, a historic achievement.

In 2025, she was signed by UP Warriors in the Women’s Premier League for ?10 lakh, marking another proud moment for her state. Later that year, she was named in India’s ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 squad and made her WODI debut against Bangladesh on 26 October 2025.

Even though she did not play the final, Uma was part of India’s World Cup-winning squad, a dream come true.

Off the field, Uma remains humble, often visiting schools to inspire girls to take up sports. Her story is a beacon of hope for rural India proving that determination, faith, and discipline can break any barrier.
