Mohammad Umar Gautam (MUG), was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh ATS. The ATS said that Gautam was the mastermind of a very large conversion racket that was going on in many states of India. The ATS has filed an FIR and made many allegations against Gautam. However his family have refuted these allegations and said he is innocent. According to the ATS, Umar Gautam has submitted documents that show he has converted 1000 people to Islam. While Umar Gautam’s daughter, Fathima who is a teacher in Delhi, says, “Those documents show the 1000 people whom Umar Gautam has helped to file legal documentation after they had already converted. He worked with a network of lawyers to facilitate the formalisation of the conversion.
As per the ATS, Umar Gautam and his associates targeted vulnerable communities like women, children and the Deaf. However the daughter claims that they have documents to show that there are people from wealthy and dominant communities who have willingly converted and have come to my father of their own will to process their legal documentation. The ATS also said, several students at Noida Deaf Society were lured with jobs, money, and marriage to convert to Islam, without the knowledge of their parents. Founder and General Secretary of Noida Deaf Society, Ruma Roka, told The Quint, “The first time I even heard of Umar Gautam was at the Lucknow ATS office when I was called for cooperating with the investigation. I have never even heard of him before that. The police have claimed that they have found the Deaf individuals who were students of NDS before were targetted and converted to Islam. So, they needed my help with the investigation. Nowhere in the press note has the police named Noida Deaf Society as an accused. It is our national duty to co-operate with the police and we will.” The ATS, had found that several foreign organisations including Pakistan’s ISI are working with MUG and his associates by giving them funds to convert people to Islam.
Umar’s daughter rubbished the funding claims and said. “My father had no links with ISI. He received funds from their friends, relatives and well-wishers, including in foreign countries such as the US and the UK. In addition, he received some Zakat, the obligatory wealth tax for Muslims. The ATS is still conducting an investigation while MUG is in jail. As and when updates come out.
