UP Declares 25th November as ‘No Non-Veg Day'
Uttar Pradesh bans meat sales on 25th Nov in tribute to Sadhu TL Vaswani's legacy of nonviolence & women's empowerment.
India is a country of many beliefs, customs, and traditions. Respecting that, there are many days when the sale of liquor and meat is prohibited. For instance, the birth anniversaries of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Mahatma Buddha are observed as non-vegetarian days and dry days too. It is believed that such practices reflect our respect for the leaders and their sacrifices. By the order of CM Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government has declared 25th November as "no non-veg day" to honor the birth anniversary and life of Sadhu TL Vaswani and promote nonviolence. According to the official statement, all meat shops and slaughterhouses throughout the state will remain shut on the said date every year. Sadhu Vaswani was born on 25th November 1879. He was an Indian educationist who started the Mira Movement in Education. The movement aimed to empower women through the right type of education. He also established St. Mira's School in Hyderabad, Sindh (Now in Pakistan) in 1933. Sadhu Vaswani deeply believed in women's empowerment long before feminism was even a topic in India. He strongly advocated the universal practice of vegetarian living and died at the age of 86 on 16th January 1966. The Sadhu Vaswani Mission in Pune is a non-profit organization that aims to take forward the teachings and mission of Sadhu T. L. Vaswani. It celebrates International Meatless Day on Vaswani's birthday every year. This is the next major announcement made by Yogi Adityanath’s government after announcing the ban on the production, storage, distribution, and sale of food products with halal certification. The government has asked local authorities to make sure that the order is followed strictly across the state.
