UP Man Cuts Open Wife’s Stomach to Check Baby’s Gender
A UP man was convicted for cutting open his 8 months pregnant wife’s stomach to check the gender of their unborn baby in 2020 and sentenced to lifetime imprisonment recently.
It is shocking to know that gender bias still exists in the 21st century in our country. So much so that a husband cut open his wife’s stomach to check the gender of their yet to be born baby.
Panna Lal and Anita had been married for 22 years. They had 5 daughters and lived in Badaun's Civil Lines, Uttar Pradesh.
The couple often indulged in fights as Panna Lal hoped that Anita would give birth to a boy every time she became pregnant. Anita's family tried to convince him to not fight over the matter but Panna Lal threatened to divorce Anita and marry another woman to fulfill his wish of having a son.
The family pacified the situation by suggesting the couple try for a baby once again. The couple tried and got pregnant once again in 2020.
One day in September 2020, when Anita was 8 months pregnant with the 6th child, the couple quarreled over the gender of their unborn baby. During the fight, Panna Lal threatened Anita and when she tried to fight, he attacked her with a sickle.
Panna Lal then used the same sickle to cut open Anita's stomach to check the gender of their unborn baby leaving her intestines hanging from her stomach.
In order to save her life, Anita pushed Panna lal ran out to the streets shouting for help. Hearing Anita's screams, her brother, who worked at a nearby shop, rescued her.
Anita was admitted to a hospital in Bareilly in critical condition. Because of the treatment Anita survived but the unborn baby, which was finally a boy this time, died due to the attack.
In the meantime, Panna Lal ran away. Anita and her family filed a case against him.
The UP police found and arrested Panna Lal.
During the court hearing, Panna Lal denied all allegations and tried to defend himself by allegeding that Anita had inflicted the wounds on herself. He said that Anita first harmed herself and then filed a false case against him because he was in a property dispute with her brothers.
According to one report, Pannalal got bail earlier. He had entered Anita’s house on several occasions and beat her up. He also vandalized the house.
The case went on for more than 3 years. The Uttar Pradesh court sentenced Panna Lal to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ?50,000 for the barbaric act on 24th May 2024.
Anita is happy that justice was served but she is also saddened by the thought that her son died before coming into the world. She now supports her five daughters and herself by running a small grocery shop in her house.
