Violent Clashes in Bengaluru Over Facebook Post

Clashes broke out in parts of Bengaluru on Tuesday 11th August night after a youth allegedly posted derogatory content about Prophet Muhammad inciting hatred on Facebook. Three people were killed in the incident and the police had to open fire. The post was made by P. Naveen, a relative of MLA Akhanda Srinivas Murthy. 1,000 people gathered outside KG Halli Police Station, demanding action. However the crowd became violent. They were chanting slogans, burnt cars and damaged public property. They even attacked the MLA’s house with stones. When the fire brigade reached the area to douse the fire, the crowd did not let it pass. The number of police was very less compared to the crowd. To control the crowd, the police had to open fire in the air. Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said that the police have also detained 165 people for rioting.
People said that the youth arrested for posting the content has denied his role. He said that his social media account was hacked. MLA Murthy released a video telling the Muslim Community to maintain peace. He said he will make sure strict action is taken. P.Naveen has claimed that he did not make the post. He said his account was hacked. He has been taken away for questioning. After violence in the city, Section 144 has been imposed across the city. State Home Minister B Bommai said that additional police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order. Chief Minister Yediyurappa in a tweet condemned the violence and ordered action against the people who were rioting and attacked the police personnel, media and the general public. He also asked people to stay calm and asked people to not get incited. BJP Karnataka President and Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Katee while speaking to reporters said that the government is thinking to hand over the case to the CB-CID for investigation.
